Unrequited Love

Prompt 25 from the new list!! 🙏

Hello my dear, I'd be happy to provide a drabble for this prompt!

25. “It hurts…” “what?” “Loving someone who doesn’t love you…”

Aemond x reader | angst to fluff

You sat beside the fire, flipping aimlessly through the book you'd chosen to read. Aemond shifted in his seat next to you, completely engrossed in his reading, oblivious to your inner turmoil.

You glanced over at the prince, the firelight casting shadows upon his angular face. His one eye was focused upon his reading, the other was covered with his usual leather eyepatch. You watched as his lips twitched into a small smile at something he read. Unbidden tears pricked the corners of your eyes; you quickly looked away, your heart twisting. He could never love you the way you loved him. You were friends, yes, since childhood. Nothing more. Never more than that.

A droplet fell off your cheek, soiling the ink on the page before you. You quickly wiped your face, drawing Aemond's attention with your hasty movement.

"Are you alright, Y/N?"

"Hmm? Oh, yes."

"You're crying."

"You're observant." You choked on your attempt at a chuckle. "This book is just so moving."

"The History of Agriculture in the Riverlands?" Aemond read the title, casting a dubious look at you. "What's wrong?"

You sighed, leaning back in your chair. Aemond closed his book, turning to give you his full attention, his eye flicking between your own, brow furrowed.

You hugged yourself, avoiding his gaze. Several silent moments passed before you spoke.

"It hurts..."

"What does?"

"Loving someone who doesn't love you."

Aemond seemed taken aback by your words, he pulled in his chin slightly, still keenly watching you. "Have you voiced your feelings?"

"Well...no."

"Then how are you certain he doesn't feel the same?"

"I...it's pretty obvious, Aemond."

The prince tilted his head, the firelight shimmering golden against his silver hair. "Perhaps you should speak to him. There is nothing to be lost by being honest."

"Just my pride." You sighed, finally flicking your eyes up to meet his gaze. "And a friendship I cherish."

He saw right through you. You could feel it in the constricting in your chest. Aemond always had the ability to read you like one of his cherished books.

He tapped his long fingers against the oak table at which the two of you sat. "You shouldn't assume what another person feels, especially when it comes to...matters of the heart."

"There's no way someone like you would be interested in me."

"Someone like me?"

"I mean, someone like him."

"Y/N." Aemond shook his head at you, a smile creeping up his lips. "If you think like that, you will never know what could come to pass."

You were breathless, the heat rising to your cheeks at his intense gaze. Aemond leaned into your space, his breath mingling with your own as he took your chin between two fingers. "I find you most enchanting. I just wanted you to take it at your own pace, slow as that may be."

"Aemond!" You giggled, your skin aflame as he skimmed his lips against yours. "You gave me no indication you wanted anything more than friendship!"

"I'll work on that." He chuckled lowly before capturing your mouth in a scorching kiss.
